Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change employers?
Yes, but you need to apply for a new visa. The new employer must sponsor the application.
How long is the visa valid?
The initial stay is normally up to 36 months or the duration of the employment contract, whichever is shorter. In some cases, the permitted stay may be shorter, including 24 months. Extensions are possible.
What happens if you lose your job?
If you lose your job, the visa normally remains valid until its expiry date. Future stay or extension will depend on your circumstances and any new qualifying employment.
Can my family come along?
Yes, spouses and unmarried children under 18 can obtain a Dependent Visa.
What is the path to Permanent Residency?
After 7 years of continuous ordinary residence in Hong Kong, you may apply for PR. Occasional visits do not qualify — it must be genuine, continuous residence.
What income tax will I pay in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong levies Salaries Tax on Hong Kong-sourced income. The rate is progressive, but there is a standard-rate logic: if the 15% standard rate applied to net income (after allowances) is lower than the progressive rate, the standard rate applies. Capital gains are not taxed.
Can I start my own company?
The Employment Visa allows you to work for your sponsoring employer. Starting and working in your own company typically requires a different visa, such as the Entrepreneur Visa or CIES.
